The diversity of habitats and ease of access all around the lake make Kerkini a photographer’s dream. As the year begins woodpeckers including Black, Syrian, Middle-Spotted and Grey-headed are most easily found and Dalmatian Pelicans look their best with bright red beaks and ruffled ‘hairstyles’ offering unparalleled opportunities for both flight and close-up work from Nikos’ boat. White Pelicans, in contrast, look their best in April and May when Bee-eaters, shrikes and Golden Orioles are everywhere and there’s also a good chance of obliging Red-footed Falcons on passage. During late May and June Little Bitterns can be easily approached as they hunt tadpoles and small fish, Lesser Spotted, Golden, Booted and Short-toed Eagles are regular as are Black Kite and Levant Sparrowhawk. The diversity of habitat offers the chance for a rich photo portfolio including not only lake and woodland birds but also birds of the high mountains including Water Pipit, Alpine Chough, Alpine Accentor, Rock Thrush and Horned Lark.
